MercyMe

Today's Song of the Week nod goes to MercyMe with "So Long Self" off of their Coming Up to Breathe album. Take a close listen to it, along with some other MercyMe songs, on the playlist down in the sidebar.

The song here echoes the feelings behind what Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:12: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." If you notice, "So Long Self" sounds like two people breaking up; in reality, it is a conversation between a Christian and his old life. Its intent is to engrain the concept that, once we turn our lives over to the Lord, our lives are forever changed. We cannot go back to doing things as we may have in the past before we knew Christ.

As Bard Millard of MercyMe sings to his old nature, "There's no room for two, so you are going to have to move." May this be on our hearts and minds this week, that we aren't who we used to be before Christ because we have been washed in the blood of the Lamb. In order to totally surrender yourself to the Lord's will for you, then you've got to bid your own self farewell.
